Folgers 2023

The Folgers Flash Exchange is an art exchange, titled after the infamous incestuous Folgers commercial. I participated this year cuz my pal spilly told us about it! You should look at spilly's Folgers page too.

This was my first time doing an AO3-hosted exchange... fun! Learned a lot! I've always been too intimidated by the "nomination" process to understand it, but with spilly's help we got through! I like these really quick events where there's less pressure to make something huge, and allows for VERY rare pairs.

PS: you may have noticed that this exchange was themed around incestuous characters. Close this window if that makes you uncomfortable. The art I made and received were non-sexual and fairly tame. Other people's writing and art on the exchange page may be more extreme.

I got matched up with MerryFortune, who requested Ail and An from the Sailor Moon anime!

It seems like I'm the first one in this tag? Cool. I'm glad that someone else remembers Ail and An from the anime. The way their designs mirrored each other (pink and blue!) made me really happy as a kid, and I didn't even realize fully that they were playing sibling during the day but clearly in love at night.

Born from the same mother tree, they are the last of their kind. The cold vacuum of space is much warmer when they're tangled in each other's roots.

Here's some of the art process for this piece!

I started with drawing the characters on sketch paper, then cleaning it up with digital lines. The original pose was a lot more static and vertical, but I tweaked it so it felt more like they were moving through space.

Then ya get the digital colors. I color-picked from a frame from the Sailor Moon anime, then used a noisy spray brush for the shadows while using a default watercolor brush from Clip Studio as the highlights. I wanted it to look like a transparent animation cel!

Actually, lemme tell you the truth. I'M the person who nominated Ail/An for this exchange. So I'm so very happy someone requested Ail/Ann (let alone remember them!), even though their arc is small and they're anime-only villains their design and story left such a mark in my baby brain growing up. They act as "brother and sister" when they're in their human disguises, but they are very much touchy and in love in their alien forms.

I love Sailor Moon for all its weird yuri and long-haired girlymens... These alien designs have such nice palm tree 80's glam hair, and cute lil jumpsuits. We not only get the English dub cousin-zoning Neptune and Uranus, but this weird hetincest as well? Thank you shojo manga.

My natural art style is more cartoony than this, but I absolutely learned how to draw by copying Sailor Moon as a kid. I still like to draw in these long-limbed shojo yaoi proportions!!! I mostly think I need to figure out the line quality I want for these yaoi proportion drawings... It's so easy to go fat thick lines for my cartoony stuff, but thin delicate lines are a mystery for my hulk hands.

I do still think the AO3 exchange format is a weeeee bit confusing. Like I don't get why the nomination stage is there... and there's no "easy" on/off switch for anon posting. But doing this gives me more confidence to participate in more exchanges if I have time!

The other pairings I requested for this exchange were Harry/(peter)/Norman from Spider-Man, Malik/Rishid from Yugioh, and Neji/Hinata from Naruto.

And now I'm thinking about the type of ships I like... for ~incest themes, I have a preference for fluffy sibling stuff. And I don't really want to see most sexual art of it. It's very similar to a childhood-friends and fated-lovers dynamic to me, the appeal is sort of mythological! Like no matter what universe, these two characters will always be connected whether it's by blood or love... And it has a sort of sweet sappy appeal to me because it's really not that uncommon for gay/lesbian/etc couples to pretend to be siblings to safely live together.

Parent/child is kind of a big squick for me UNLESS it's in a very specific power reversal situation (which is what I do for Harry/Norman lol). I'm glad that these events have DNW's so I can be oddly specific about my weird preferences :P

I'm overall a huge fan of mundane situations, platonic interactions, unrequited feelings, comedy, drama, trauma, guro, torture, drugs, necrophilia, and medical stuff. I also like guys with coochies or nullo (no genitals for any reason) if you happen to write sex stuff.

And as a SUPER SURPRISE TREAT, I got a MYSTERIOUS Harry x Norman's-decapitated-head drawing too?! HOORAY! This is exactly what I've always wanted... An old saggy corpse, and the sickly victorian manchild who keeps that old saggy corpse in the fridge!
